"If the world doesn't support slave labor in developed countries, then why should it exist in developing ones?"

Indian Scenario

Textile Industry, overtime, has become one of the major contributors of India's economy and generates employment and profit annually. As a result, malpractices in this sector affect a lot of other aspects of the country.

Recently, many Indian cotton growing farmers committed suicide and the cause could be broadly traced back to the growing trend of Fast Fashion. Many US-based companies wanted to push Nitrogen fertilizers in the developing countries, as a result of which the requirement of genetically modified crops arose; native crops couldn't take up a lot of chemicals and thus a gene had to be added to produce BT-Cotton, a genetically modified version of cotton which could take up more and more chemicals.

The problem increased when the modified crops didn't hold up the promise of warding off pests and additional pesticides were required. This led to soil contamination as once you start using pesticides, you keep needing more of them.

Summing up, the same company provided for the modified seeds, the additional pesticides as well as the medicines to cure the diseases caused by the use of pesticides. This pushed the farmers into a debt cycle.

The 2018 Lakme Fashion Week's focus of the sustainable fashion day was #northeastmojo in collaboration with the United Nations to promote sustainable textile growth in India.
